Our take on the best movies you need to go see right now!
Today’s post is all about having some fun. Movies are one of my favorite things on the planet to do when I am not working. I gain a ton of great ideas from different movies and I love finding a hidden gem that not many people know about.
Today this list is all about that. 20 of the best movies you likely never heard of AND need to go see immediately. Let’s get started. So much to cover. Let me know in the comments how many of these you have seen and which is your favorite! If you haven’t seen them, let me know later how it has changed your life (not even kidding).
Order of selections - and you may know or may not.
First things first, let’s look at some “rules” of the list. This is just my opinion of what I think is awesome. You can choose to agree with me or not (you will though). Of course, some of these movies may also be ones you think are known. I did my best in that regard. Finally, I thought about rating these in order from my favorite to least, but honestly, I love them all so much I couldn’t put them in an order. So it will just be random. All links and photos are from advertising used by the various movie studios. Oh, and I am doing these reviews mostly based on my memory of the movies, so please don’t yell at me too much if I make a mistake or two.
I’ll give you a bit of info of each movie and what I love about them, without giving out any spoilers that tell you too much about the plot or secrets, because I know you are going to want to binge watch all 20 of these.
LET'S GET TO THE LIST!
#1 - Scott Pilgrim Vs the World (2010)
I lied a little bit above. if I was to rank these movies, this movie would likely be at the top. I literally just watched it again today and it’s just as good as watching it for the first time. It has to be one of the most unique movies you will ever watch.
Scott Pilgrim Vs the World from Universal stars Michael Cera (Superbad, Juno) in the title character of Scott. I’ll tell you right now this will be the hardest movie to give a description to while not giving things away. Scott starts the movie in a bit of a funk having recently been dumped but now dating a high schooler named Knives Chau, played by Ellen Wong. He is roommates with Wallace (Kieran Culkin), has a sister named Stacey (Anna Kendrick) and is part of a new garage band called Sex Bob-omb (it’s not like that stay with me), with Stephen (Mark Webber) and Kim on drums (Alison Pill). They will later take on Jason Schwarzman’s character Gideon as he formed the League of Evil Ex’s that Scott must battle throughout the movie to be able to date Ramona Flowers played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane, Fargo).
Can I say more than this without giving stuff away? Like I said this movie is extremely unique and you have to give up the idea that things in this movie get weird and quirky and at times make no sense. But that is also why it is so awesome. It’s a form of comedy that I absolutely love as you will see with other movies on this list.
The best way to describe this movie is to say it’s set in the real world that is spliced together into a Vs style video game like you would play in the arcade such as Mortal Kombat. There are so many amazing characters in this movie that I didn’t even name and a lot of actors you will know. For starters, how about Captain America himself Chris Evans. It also features a young Brie Larson who will soon be staring with Chris again in Captain Marvel and the upcoming Avengers movie. Let’s also throw in some awesome scenes with former Superman Brandon Routh and you have both Marvel and DC comics covered. Kieran Culkin, Alison Pill, and Mary Winstead give some of my favorite performances in this movie, as well as Cera, of course, is a given.
It’s an amazing ride of a movie that might make no sense, and you might say “what on earth just happened” a few times. But that is why it is so fun! This is a MUST see.

#2 - Hot Fuzz (2007)
Well look at that, another movie on our list from director Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Shaun of the Dead). He really does have a resume filled with some great comedy movies that are just a ton of fun
Hot Fuzz stars Simon Pegg as tough-nosed, by the book cop Nicholas Angel, who is reassigned to another police station in the seemingly quiet town of Sandford. Angel, as he is nicknamed in the movie, is paired up with his new partner and son of the police chief (Bill Nighy), PC Danny Butterman played by the very funny Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead)
Soon Angel can’t handle the seemingly quiet town without the action, being used to working in the big city. He starts to pay closer attention when murders start happening around town to realize, something fishy is going on in the city of Sandford.
Craziness ensues, Bob’s your uncle and everyone is off. It really is a funny British comedy that I highly recommend and lands near the top of a lot of comedy movie lists as a cult favorite

#3 - Garden State (2004)
Let’s stay on the trend here of dry comedies for a bit longer (although there are a lot of them on this list). Garden State features one of the best soundtracks that you are going to find anywhere (and it has the Grammy to prove it). It features bands like Coldplay (back before they were huge), The Shins, Colin Hay, Simon & Garfunkel, and Frou Frou in the most popular track. You might know Frou Frou better from its now solo singer Imogen Heap.
Garden State, is set exactly where you would think it would be, in New Jersey. Andrew Largeman, played by writer and director of the film Zach Braff, has to venture back to his home for his Mother’s funeral. Andrew has been away for over 10 years and returns to find that not much has changed.
Not long after returning, he runs into the cute and quirky Sam played by the very talented Natalie Portman (Black Swan, Star Wars). Their personalities hit it off right away as Sam tries to break Andrew out of his shell, brought on in part by his depression medication. Boy, I am really making this sound like a comedy aren’t I? It is, just trust me. Soon they are going on adventures together, meeting each other’s equally weird family, and spending time with some of his old classmates.
Comedy mixed with some serious and poignant moments about life, mixed with an amazing soundtrack. What more could you ask for?

#4 - Warrior (2011)
Let’s change things up a bit from the dark/dry comedies to a more of an action movie with an amazing script and story. Featuring one of my favorite Actors, Tom Hardy (Dark Knight Rises, MadMax) alongside Joel Edgerton (Zero Dark Thirty).
Tom plays Tommy, a life-long wrestler, and fighter who stays to help out his dying mother before taking off to join the Marines. Joel plays Tommy’s brother Brendan Conlon, who leaves to get away from his abusive drunk father played by Nick Nolte in one of his finest performances of his career. Nolte would be nominated for an Oscar for his performance as their Dad who tries to fight his addiction to alcohol while trying to reconnect with his two sons and their families
Brendan, a local school teacher, is down on his luck and taking local MMA fights at the bars at night to try and make ends meat, while Tommy finds himself trying to re-adjust after coming back from serving in the war.
Fate will bring them back together through their own separate journeys of fighting not only with their challenges in the ring but also with their own demons in life.
It is honestly one of the deepest and well-acted fight related movies I have ever seen. Do you like Rocky or Rudy? This movie, in my opinion, tops both of them.

#5 - Edge of Tomorrow: Live. Dive. Repeat. (2014)
One of the best Sci-Fi movies that far too few of people have probably seen. Starring Emily Blunt (Looper, A Quiet Place) with Tom Cruise, who makes for a combo on screen with a lot of natural chemistry. It’s really going to be hard to give you too much of a description of this movie without some slight spoilers. So If you don’t want to have any surprises at all, feel free to just check out the trailer below and get your hands on a copy. Well actually… it tells you this in the trailer, so all is fair game.

This is the groundhogs day of Sci-Fi movies. We find ourselves in this movie in a future world where Aliens have invaded. A war has been going on between the aliens and humans for a while and the humans are not fairing well. Tom Cruise plays Cage, who finds himself assigned to the front lines when he is normally more of an office guy. As the trailer tells you, at first he doesn’t last long in his fight with the aliens, lasting only a few seconds before dying.
But something strange happens to Cage when he has this deathly experience with the alien. As we will soon see, Cage quickly discovers that he is now reliving the same day over and over again. On one of Cage’s many attempts at surviving, he comes across the war hero Rita, who is played masterfully by Emily Blunt. She has become the poster child for the war propaganda and her stories of heroism from the war efforts are spread across the troops.
This is one of the best movies I have ever seen working in the slight cliche plot of the Groundhog movie type effect, and I believe it’s even a better movie than Groundhog Day itself. Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, put forth one of their best performances as they team up against the aliens.
It’s a must-see for those of you that love a Sci-Fi Alien movie that has an actual plot, some meaty twists, and even some comedy mixed in.

#6 - Punch Drunk Love (2002)
Here will be one of the biggest shockers on the list. This is hands down for me Adam Sandler’s best movie. I have to have seen this movie at least 5 times (likely more). You know how actors who are known for being in silly comedy movies once in a while step into a serious role and just blow you away? This is definitely one of those times. Robin Williams was known for doing this a lot with movies like Good Will Hunting and One Hour Photo. This is Adam Sandler’s Good Will Hunting, only in what I would describe as a very dark and dry comedy love story. Would you believe that Sandler even scored a Golden Globe nomination for his performance?
Directed by the same person that brought you some of Daniel Day-Lewis’ Oscar-nominated performances such as There Will Be Blood and Phantom Thread and other amazing movies like The Master which is also on this list.
Barry Egan (played by Sandler) is an introverted and troubled novelty supplier who manages a warehouse. We soon find out that Barry has some hidden issues that he struggles to deal with throughout the movie, and of which his family does not help at all. Through a series of weird events, we see Barry come across a baby piano and also stumble upon a scheme he found to stick it to the Pudding company… yes, a pudding company.
Just as random of a life event for Barry, he meets Lena played by the remarkable Emily Watson (Gosford Park, Red Dragon) in one of her best performances of her career. Quiet and meek just like Barry, they know they have an unspoken connection together. This is where it becomes a love story.
Something in Barry’s past soon returns to threaten his new found love interest and introduces us to Dean Trumbell, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master, Capote). The nuttiness ensues, a whole lot of pudding is purchased, and a love match is born.
If you aren’t a fan of Adam Sandler, this is the movie that will change your mind.

#7 - The Master (2012)
The Master is a movie that Scientology secretly hates, which is just one of the many reasons to love it.
Officially it holds no connection to Scientology, but unofficially it follows closely to a lot of the history of their creator and leader L Ron Hubbard. As with many of the movies on this list, you are going to hear me call this yet again some of the best performances for some very well known actors.
In this movie, the role that resembles the life of L Ron Hubbard is a character named Lancaster Dodd, played by the brilliant Philip Seymour Hoffman. This yet another performance where Hoffman is nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe.
This is really the story however of Freddie Quell played by one of the most talented actors out there who will soon be starring as the new Joker, Joaquin Phoenix. His performance is truly amazing and also earns him an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for best actor.
Freddie is a troubled soul who gets drunk one night and has to escape before he faces real trouble from the law. He hides on board a private yacht as a stowaway. He soon finds himself confronted by Lancaster Dodd who wants to put him to work to earn his keep, making some homemade hooch and soon ropes him into psychological experiments that greatly resemble Scientology’s auditing process with their e-meter.
Dodd becomes a mentor to Freddie as he struggles to find purpose in his life. Rounding out the cast in yet another Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated performance, we have Amy Adams (Arrival, American Hustle) playing Peggy Dodd.
This is a great movie if you want to see award-nominated performances and see the story of Scientology that really isn’t about Scientology… but we all know it really is.
Fun side note. Some conspiracy theories state that this movie could have been the reason that Philip Seymour Hoffman died suddenly to mysterious causes.

#8 - Fargo (1996)
Quirky Fargo North Dakota is the setting for this dark comedy filled with wit and drama. Are you sensing a pattern yet that I have a lot of dark and dry comedies on this list?
We follow Jerry Lundegaard played by William H. Macy (Shameless) and his series of unfortunate events in his life through this star-studded cast. The talented list of actors includes Steve Buscemi, Harvey Presnell, Frances McDormand, and John Carroll Lynch.
Jerry tries to get away with some crimes that he thinks he can get away with, but we quickly find out he is outmatched by the persistent police work of Marge Gunderson.
Just a fun movie that is a good set up before you watch the TV series, or for after you have already seen the series to catch its origins. Written and Directed by the talented Coen brothers.

#9 - Adventureland (2009)
I am going to be the first one to tell you that his movie stars two people that I normally can’t stand, Jessie Eisenberg (Social Network) as James Brennan and Kristen Stewart (Twilight) as Em Lewin. Yet somehow this movie just works and it’s very enjoyable.
A lighter, fun comedy on this one, we follow the adventures of James as he loses his college money and his place to live with his friend and is forced to take a job at the local Adventureland theme park. Maybe this movie reminds me of one of the best summer jobs I had growing up working at Dorney Park and Wild Water Kingdom in Allentown, PA.
I understand that after Jessie’s weird performance as Lex Luthor and Stewart’s weird performances in almost everything she is ever in, that you are going to have doubts about sitting down and watching this movie. Don’t because it’s great.
James and Em have a fun crush on each other that quickly turns into a summer romance. But things get complicated as Em has some secrets she is not telling. Peppered in with some comedy moments from people like Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig, who played the theme park supervisors, there are a lot of good laughs to go around. Add in a side role for Ryan Reynolds and a great performance by Martin Starr as James’ best friend in the movie and you have a winning combination.
A fun summer romance movie with a few surprises, Lisa P, and a Giant Panda that almost gets someone killed. As a fun side, you can try and figure out if this a prequel to the movie Zombieland also starring Jessie Eisenberg.

#10 - Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
Moonrise Kingdom is one of those movies that you get excited about because you feel like you could have made that. No fancy CGI, no expensive set or production value. Just a fun and quirky coming of age movie.
Written and directed by the great Wes Anderson, who brought you other movies like the Royal Tenenbaums and Grand Budapest Hotel. His works always have that same type of minimalistic and retro feel to them.
Sam is in the boy scouts (played by Jared Gilman) which prepares him for his journey to run away to avoid bullying and other issues coming up in his life. He is joined on his journey by his crush Suzy played by Kara Hayward.
This cast is so rich that I wanted to take the rest of this description just to list them all, it’s insane.
Bruce Willis as Captain Sharp, Edward Norton as the scoutmaster, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, and Jason Schwartzman round out the cast.

#11 - The Big Lebowski (1998)
“Smokey, this is not Nam, this is bowling. There are rules”
“I’m the Dude. So that’s what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you’re not into the whole brevity thing”
“Donny you’re out of your element”
This is one of those movies of a thousand quotes that you will love to say to your friends for years. If I was ranking these movies in order, this one should be at the top. I have watched it probably at least 10 times. It’s also one of those movies that you say… how on earth do I summarize this?
“The Dude” played by Jeff Bridges is his own man, who likes to play by his own laid-back view of the world. And the Dude loves to bowl with his buddies Walter (John Goodman) and Donny (Steve Buscemi). Our story starts as The Dude has his rug peed on by a bunch of Nihilists, mistaking him for a different Lebowski. “That rug really tied the room together did it not?”
A mess ensues that is such an array of misfortunate events that I am not going to spoil any of them for you because to spoil any part of this movie for those that haven’t seen it would be criminal. Another star-studded cast that no doubt want to be a part of anything the Coen Brothers put together. We have Julianne Moore as Maude Lebowski, David Huddleston as the Big Lebowski, Philip Seymour Hoffman as Brandt, and even appearances by John Turturro and Tara Reid. Sam Elliott even steps in to narrate a bit as the Stranger.
It is an absolute must see and you will laugh out loud throughout the movie. So pour yourself a White Russian, kick back and enjoy.

#12 - (500) Days of Summer (2009)
There really isn’t a ton to say about this one. It’s just a nice romantic comedy that is fun to watch with heartfelt performances that you can relate to. Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is going through his ups and downs with dating the ladies as he works writing greeting cards.
A flirtation in the office with Summer (Zooey Deschanel) turns into a romance. This one will mess with your heartstrings. I guess it’s a bit of a story of… life giving you weird hints of the direction you are supposed to go in.

#13 - Finding Vivian Maier (2013)
I could probably write an entire blog post on this or even something like the series on Richard Avedon. As a photographer, of course, this is appealing to me, but it is likely something you would enjoy as a none photographer as well.
John Maloof, purchased a collection of Maier’s photos both developed and undeveloped, at the time claiming to not know what a treasure he has just discovered. A nanny, who had a secret passion for photography, is uncovered in this documentary. She would go on to become what some have called the greatest street photographers. Fitting for this list is, that no one knew about her or her talents. I own her book of street portraits and it is one of my favorites. I highly recommend you pick it up as well as check out this documentary.
What a find by Maloof. Something that we would all hope to stumble across. Some of these prints sell for $1,500 or more a piece now.

#14 - High Fidelity (2000)
This was on my all time favorites list for a long time until I think I simply watched it so many times I had it memorized. This is the style of comedy that I enjoy I guess. As I am typing this, I am taking another movie off of this and replacing it with another John Cusack movie that people need to see.
Yes, I am a John Cusack fan (for his movies at least). John plays Rob Gordon, a small record store owner who is facing a recent harsh breakup to his long-term girlfriend Laura (Iben Hjejle). Barry, played by Jack Black and Dick (Todd Louiso) tries to console him by going through their top tracks list (running theme of the movie).
Rob decides to do his own top 10 list by looking up his worst breakups, reconnecting with them and asking them… why did we break up? As he continues throughout the movie to deal with Laura moving on in her life, in the most entertaining way possible.
If you are a fan of John Cusack’s classic movies, you should check this one out.

#15 - Love & Mercy (2014)
This is the movie I had to stop in my tracks and add to this list. Love & Mercy is a pretty amazing movie that went under the radar and is the story of the Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson. It follows two separate parts of his life at the same time. The first, when he is working on his masterpiece Pet Sounds, and later in his life when he was under the overbearing and sad thumb of Dr. Eugene Landy (played by Paul Giamatti)
We get to see two masterful performances of the same character. John Cusack plays the older version of Brian Wilson as he meets a love interest in Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks). As she tries to help him get out of the control of Dr. Landy, Brian struggles with the idea of if his doctor is actually helping him, or just taking advantage and drugging him.
I think the even stronger performance goes to Paul Dano as he plays the young Brian Wilson. It’s an amazing insight into watching him make Pet Sounds and the struggles he went through with his brothers who didn’t understand his musical gifts, and his growing mental conditions. A true mad genius that brought us some of the best music in our lifetime.
One of the best musical biopics that I think I have seen. I highly recommend it.

#16 - Sunshine (2007)
We needed another Sci-Fi movie on this list for sure. Like other great movies similar to this, such as Event Horizon, Sunshine goes 50 years into the future to show us a glimpse into what might become. The sun is beginning to die and a team of astronauts including Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins) must travel into space to revive the sun. This is a second mission after the first had already failed. They can not fail again. They set off on the Icarus as they struggle to manage through not only the difficulties of space but also one another.
The cast also includes Rose Byrne (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Chris Evans (Captain America) and Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange).
This movie is visually stunning and will leave you guessing until the very end. Sci-Fi movies often fail in the area of having a deeper and interesting story. So when I find one that hits on those notes, I am all for it.

#17 - My Cousin Vinny (1992)
How can you go wrong with a little Joe Pesci, Marisa Tomei, and Ralph Macchio?
This might be the oldest one on the list, but it’s a classic and one that doesn’t get enough credit for its classic status. Like The Big Lewboski, it’s full of one-liners that you will repeat to your friends in conversations.
Fred Gwynne (Herman Munster) is also brilliant as the southern judge.
Bill Gambini (Ralph Macchio) finds himself in a pickle when he and his friend get confused for a crime they didn’t commit. Bill by mistake admits to a murder that he didn’t realize he was admitting to. “I shot the clerk. I shot the clerk?”
Vinny, Bill’s cousin is called in to help him win the case. A new york lawyer, who has his own way of doing things, finds himself in front of a no-nonsense judge that doesn’t care much for his brand of swagger.
Mona Lisa Vito (Tomei) is Vinny’s girlfriend who comes along for the ride and to keep Vinny out of too much trouble.
A comedy classic!

#18 - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
This is a movie from back when Jim Carrey was an actor and not losing his mind (yea I said it).
Joel Barish (Carrey) finds himself visiting a clinic that can help you forget about something painful in your life such as an ex-girlfriend. They can map your brain, find the memories and erase them. In this movie, love finds a way to rewrite what had been once erased.
Kate Winslet plays Clementine, who falls for Joel and then doesn’t and then doesn’t but doesn’t etc. I should have warned you, this is one of those ones that’s really hard to explain and not give things away. Basically, what I think I can tell you is, Joel regrets having the procedure done (which didn’t work) and he chases to keep his memories of Clementine before they are erased forever.

#19 - The Brothers Bloom (2008)
This movie was in my top 10 list for a long time. I just love the quirky performances. Not just from the big name actors but the performance of Rinko Kikuchi as Bang Bang. She barely says anything in this movie and I laugh every time I watch it.
Bloom and Stephen are brothers played by Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo, who are con men, constantly looking for the greatest con of all time. Known for always having a twist or two up their sleeve that makes their cons more elaborate than anyone else.
They run into the adorable Penelope (Rache Weisz) living in a mansion so large that she clearly doesn’t know what to do it in. Wrecking her expensive yellow sports car as soon as she leaves the driveway. The brothers have found their next mark.
It’s a laugh a minute and also a really deep story that has lots of plot twists that you will have to watch twice to catch them all.

#20 - Predestination (2014)
Well, we have come to the end of the list, and I have definitely left the weirdest one for last. It’s hard to explain this one as well without giving away the big part of the movie that I wouldn’t want to rob you of. So for the first time in this list, I am going to give you the description quoted from IMDB.
“Predestination chronicles the life of a temporal agent sent on an intricate series of time-travel journeys designed to ensure the continuation of his law enforcement career for all eternity. Now, on his final assignment, the Agent must pursue the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time.” – IMDB
It’s a time travel movie starring Ethan Hawke and it will leave you with questions at every turn. At the end of this movie I literally said out loud “what on earth just happened”. I think I had to draw a diagram afterward to try and figure it out. I LOVE movies like that. Ones you have to think about for a while after you are done watching it and that you will want to watch again to see what you missed.
