Sports In The South

Art Exhibit by Jeff dietz photography

Inspired by the work of late legendary photographer Richard Avedon, Jeff Dietz is embarking on a new “In the American West” style project called “Sports in the South”. The project will start right here in Jeff’s hometown of North Texas. Seeking High School athletes around the area and parents who would like to participate in this on going art exhibit.

The idea for this project sparked when I was looking through the work of Richard Avedon and his project In the American West. If you are not familiar with Avedon, he was known for taking gripping portraits of individuals from every day life and told their story in an honest and gripping fashion.

He toured the American West photographed interesting people that he met along the way who had interesting professions, character, or something fascinating about their look.

As you know, my photography studio focuses on photographing the high school athlete with our Fashion Sports Portraits and Senior Pictures. I am always looking for something new to offer that is really different and outside the box.

It struck me as I was looking at his work, what if I did this of athletes after their games? The grit and battle of the field. The emotions of exhaustion, celebration, defeat, hard work, and pride. Mixed with the war paint they often wear under their helmets, and the bumps and the bruises.

I thought that this could be a truly interesting project and way to photograph the South athletes like never before.

This project just needs the first students to be willing to take part for us to show everyone how powerful these photographs can be.

They will all be photographed in black and white against a white background in the Avedon style.

How Do This Work?

Your first thoughts I am sure is how on earth would this work and how much will it cost me? There is no doubt that when I came up with with this idea, I knew the hardest part would be the logistics of how to arrange the photo shoots and when. Instead of doing this all in one paragraph, let me break this down into a few sections.

WHEN

As I talked about above, it’s important to capture these photos after the students have worked hard on the field. This could actually be after a full practice or preferably after a game.

One of our first opportunities is at the upcoming Lacrosse Championships that will be held May 11 & 12 at Ron Poe Stadium. There are several local teams that will be participating.

WHERE

As you can see with the photo on the left, Avedon’s style consisted of him taping a piece of white backdrop to the semi shaded side of a building, wall, or anything he could find.

So this is all I would need as well. We would find a location right at the field where the game was taking place that was out of the way of the guests for us to easily photograph a few of the players after the game.

WHO

This is available to any team in the Dallas Fort Worth area who would be interested in participating and any events happening in the area. This includes any sport, not just football or lacrosse.

It is not meant to be a team photo or that I would be photographing every member of the team. There is simply not the time to do so as each portrait would take time to set up and produce the right mood and expression for the artistic portrait.

My goal would be to photograph about a half dozen people from each team for a given game. How we would like to select those people are based on first and foremost those who’s parents and themselves are open to taking the time and committing after a game to stop and have the portrait done with us.

I would love to have players that are known for having interesting looks to them and characters.

COST

In the initial stages of this project, I am mostly seeking people that are interested in taking part and giving their time to the project. We need to build a collection of photographs that will be the basis to expand this project much larger.

For that reason, the early participants will be able to do so at no cost. You will receive a websized, non printable copy of the photo that is selected of you from the photos taken. As is done with most master works of art, it is likely only one or two photos from each person will be chosen in the end to be the best of the best to display.

Parents will also be able to purchase a limited edition special print from the project if they show choice, but there is no obligation to do so. Again, for being an early participant, you will be offered a special deal for this print.

What Do They Wear?

This photo shoot is about being real. So there is nothing additional that they need to wear or prepare for these photos. I want to photograph them as they are as they come off the field. They can have their stick, helmet, football etc would be fine. Depending on the sport there could also be variety, like for instance with football, we could have photos with whatever is under their pads and jersey once they take that off exiting the field.

About Jeff Dietz Photography

We created the Fashion Sports Portrait for students and parents that wanted a higher level of quality than what was typically presented for senior athletes. Texas is the nation’s leader in sports and they deserve a quality of portraits that matches the reputation for being the best student athletes. We wanted our photos to look and feel like you were being featured for a magazine like Sports Illustrated, GQ, Vanity Fair, or similar celebrity magazine. We wanted to elevate High School Sports Portraits to a whole new level. The Fashion Sports portrait was born.
